Norton County Community Foundation Awards $31,854.50 in January Grant Cycle

Norton, Kansas, January 2022 – Norton County Community Foundation (NCCF) awarded $31,854.50 in the January grant cycle. Funds were part of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas. Grant funds supported the following projects:

  • City of Almena received $15,854.50 for the demolition of a deteriorating building on Main Street.

  • City of Norton, c/o Norton Travel & Tourism received $16,000 for the Norton County Sesquicentennial Celebration.

In an effort to preserve Almena’s historic downtown block of Main Street and stop the deterioration of adjoining brick buildings, it was determined that 512 Main must be torn down. The building is taking on water as the roof has completely fallen in, and the walls are beginning to fall in as well, creating damage to the Senior Center on the north side. After the building is safely torn down and the integrity of the adjoining buildings is checked, the City hopes to create a Memorial Park in its place. The Park would honor all 5 branches of the military and provide shelters, trees, and landscaping for residents to enjoy.

Norton County will be celebrating its Sesquicentennial in 2022. This 150th Celebration will be a promotion of all things Norton County and will take place from June 23 - July 31st. It will include a 5K, Parade, Fireworks, Car Show, Historic Re-enactments, Folklore, County Fair, and much more! NCCF grant funds will be used to help promote the Sesquicentennial and to sponsor community-wide events such as the Crazy Day Event taking place at the Courthouse Square and Washington Park on July 16.

The guidelines and application for the Hansen Community Grant can be found on NCCF’s website at nortonccf.org. Applications are due the last day of the month to be considered for the next month’s funding. For more information, please contact Tara Vance at 785.874.5106, foundation@nortonccf.org, or visit the NCCF office at the Heaton Building in Downtown Norton, KS, located at 112 S.
